Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening

The Nottinghamshire AAA Screening Programme was suspended as of 18th March 2020 due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.  The programme is now planning to restart its services as from 1st July 2020.  We are making every effort to ensure that clinics will be undertaken in a safe and sustainable way, in accordance with both local and national guidance, whilst maintaining a high quality service.

We are initially prioritising our activity, based on clinical risk, to those deemed at high risk of rupture and those who screen positive.  To this end, we have been contacting GP practices requesting further information on their patients to enable the AAA Screening Programme Clinical Director to make a final decision as to whether they should be invited at this time.  The Clinical Director will weigh the benefits and risk of inviting each person based on the information received.

For those people who had their initial appointments cancelled and those who have had their appointments delayed, a national assessment is currently being undertaken to determine when the benefit of AAA screening is likely to outweigh the clinical risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.  Therefore, we have been advised that primary AAA screening should not restart until the outcome of this assessment has been considered.  We are currently still awaiting the outcome of this assessment.  We will be in contact when we have received further information.
